Abstract
The relative success of the New York Yankees compared to the Boston Red Sox in Major League Baseball is an anomaly that requires explanation. Here, it is argued that in other major sports, Boston teams outcompete their New York rivals. But in baseball, the opposite is true with statistically significant irregularities that indicate the presence of greater forces. This article demonstrates the significance of the Curse of the Bambino (a phrase popularized by the Boston sports writer Dan Shaughnessy) hurting the Red Sox’s championship hopes. Statistical analysis reveals a pattern of early and late clustering separated by an 86-year drought, a configuration highly inconsistent with a constant-probability model (p ~ 0.0000000), providing strong evidence against randomness.
